Former Republican presidential nominee Nikki Haley has decided to join Edelman, one of the world’s largest public relations firms.
Haley had spent much of the last year unsuccessfully running to become the Republican Party’s nominee in the 2024 Presidential Election. Despite losing to former President Donald Trump, the former United Nations ambassador did surprisingly well in the primaries.
This jump into the private sector is odd for multiple reasons.
To start, Trump has said that she will work for his administration “in some form.” She endorsed Trump for president despite having spent months ruthlessly attacking the controversial political figure. Edelman has not said whether her role at the firm will prevent her from working for the Trump Administration if he wins in November.
This decision is also odd given that Nikki Haley has spent most of her career working for the government in some capacity. She served as the governor of South Carolina from 2011 to 2017 and served in the U.S. House of Representatives prior to that.
It’s not uncommon for politicians to toggle back and forth between the private sector and government. That’s actually quite a common critique of our nation’s politics- there’s a revolving door between large corporations and working for the public. Haley is no stranger to this intermingling of incentives. She’s been critiqued for serving on the board of Boeing. The question here isn’t if Haley will go back to politics, but when. Will she run again for office in 2028? Why join a large firm when the Republican nominee has promised that you’ll land a job in his administration?
Whether Haley will continue to be a figure in American politics going forward is unknown, but for now she’ll be out of the public’s eye as she works for one of the largest and most significant strategic communications firms in the world.
